This Girl Likes to Eat

New York has certainly turned me into quite the little foodie! What can I say though, I enjoy GOOD food! Lucky for me, I’ve had more of my fair share of food festivals to go to recently. Let me start by introducing you to The Great Googa Mooga Festival.

This year was the first event as such for the city and was put on by the same presenters of the food traditions, Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival and the Golden Gate Park’s Outside Lands Festival. The general admission tickets were free, but geting your hands on a pair was no easy feat! The event “sold out” of tickets within minutes of being available online.

The festival took place on some uncharted territory for me, Prospect Park in Brooklyn. The park is outside of Park Slope which is an absolutely adorable part of Brooklyn that is a hot-spot for families. While I’d been to Park Slope one other time I had never actually made it to the park so I was excited for a new adventure. I was pleasantly surprised too! I had no idea how big Prospect Park was! I’m going to go ahead and coin it the “Central Park” of Brooklyn just to compare sizes. On our walk to the festival we even passed a lake and a water fall. We were definitely questioning if we were still in NYC and I must say it was a nice change of pace. After a 10 minute or so walk through the park we made it to the festival entrance. We ended up getting there about an hour after it started and I sure am glad. It was already packed!

After scoping out the booths for 20 minutes or so, I knew exactly where I was going to try some grub. Crif Dogs. I had heard about the place from a couple of friends and have been dying to try their hotdogs ever since and now was my chance! The dog of choice for the festival was their Chihahua, a bacon wrapped hot dog covered with avocado and sour cream. Definitely not a combination I would have ever thought of, but boy was it a unique spin on an American classic!

After we got our first round of food we spread out our blankets and relaxed on the lawn to soak up some rays and listen to the live music. It ended up being a pretty hot day though so we had to keep moving! Moving, moving, moving, movinnggggggg! Moving to the Soul Rolls booth. What’s a Soul Roll you ask? I really couldn’t tell you. No one really could that was in line to order one, but we knew that rapper turned chef, Coolio, was behind the madness and we were willing to give it a shot. The rolls were similar to egg rolls, but were instead stuffed with a mix of beef and vegetables and served with peach or mango BBQ sauce. Again, not entirely sure what was in them, but I can tell you they were good!

By around 4 p.m. the crowds had doubled and the heat was taking a toll on my poor skin so I wrapped up the event and headed back into the city! Besides, I needed to get a little rest before round 2 of food festivals the next day! Oh yes, round 2!

Round 2 of my food festival weekend actually just included one sole mission. Getting a blooming onion. You see, one of the great things about NYC in the summer is there is a street fair every weekend in a different part of the city. I can’t get enough street fairs! There is one street fair that stands out amongst the rest though and that is the 9th Avenue International Food Festival! Why does this one stand out? Two words. Blooming onions. I discovered them last year and have pretty much been counting down until this year’s festival since.

BINGO! Found them! It was funny too because the guy making them was the same guy from last year! He sure knows what he’s doing. And after eating this heavenly goodness I realized it was time to throw in the eating weekend towel!

Columbia Reunion Weekend

No rest for the weary! After a wonderful week at home and a 4 day work week I definitely could have stayed in bed all weekend.. but that wasn’t in the cards for this weekend! And boy, let me tell you those 30 year olds can party a lot harder than me, haha.

Friday we kicked the weekend off at the Intrepid for Columbia’s Young Alumni Party. I had been really looking forward to checking out the Intrepid because it is somewhere I haven’t been yet! Plus, if you recall, it’s going to be the permanent home of the space shuttle this summer (starting this Tuesday actually).

The Intrepid is so cool because the museum is actually on a CVS-11 aircraft carrier on the Hudson River. Not only does it store pieces of U.S. history, but it also has it’s own story. Prior to the museum opening in 1982, the Intrepid actually served in WW II in 1943. Today, it rests in the river and stands strong to almost a million visitors each year.

The Young Alumni Party catered to the “younger” crowd of alums over the last ten years so I wasn’t the youngest in the crowd! I took it upon myself to celebrate my own 3 year reunion along with the Columbia kids, why not right? It was great to get together with some of Chris’ college friends, both ones I’ve met before and others that I got to meet for the first time. It was such a fun evening despite the weather shutting down the outdoor portion of the party. Can I add the unplanned rain left Chris and I SOAKING wet trying to hunt down a cab sans coats or an umbrella after the event? Lucky for me, I’m from Washington so a little rain doesn’t scare me.. as long as it is at the end of the night!

For night 2, we were headed up to Columbia’s campus on the Upper West Side. I’ve only been to Columbia’s campus one other time, but absolutely love it. Then again, I’m a total sucker for nostalgic college campuses. I can get completely lost (sometimes literally) in the history and architecture of campuses, and Columbia is no exception. If I put you right on campus you really could completely forget that you’re in New York City because of the community atmosphere.

The evening started with a cocktail hour and dinner, which gave us plenty of time for Chris to catch up with old friends, some of which he really hadn’t seen in ten years. The reunion really left me wondering if University of Oregon puts anything to this extent on for reunions. I know we have an active Alumni association and Homecoming events, but I’m really not sure we have anything like the weekend Columbia put on. Then again, there were 20,000+ undergrads at my college when I graduated and a mere 6,000+ at Columbia, which makes for much smaller graduating classes.

Following dinner, there was a Starlight reception, complete with an ice sculpture of a lion! They also had a dessert bar and a live band. The one thing that was on my mind at the reception though was finding the lion statue I stumbled upon the year before!

BINGO, this lion!

We wrapped up the evening by stopping by some of Chris’ crew’s old stomping grounds before calling it an evening! Fabulous weekend :)

Home Sweet Home

What a wonderful trip home! A special thanks to my parents, family and friends that made my trip so amazing. A thanks to Washington weather is also in check for not pouring on us my whole trip! Here’s a look back on some of the highlights of the trip!

Snoqualmie FallsMama Duck and I were in search of an adventure (as well as somewhere I could practice my driving) so we headed up towards North Bend! Off to to Snoqalmie Falls, the casino, and the outlet malls before the weather turned sour for us.

Elk Head Brewery: We checked into the brewery on Friday night for some classic Buckley brews and a fun evening with some of my mom’s friends.

Muckleshoot Casino: I got to catch up with some of my friends from home out at the casino!

Family BBQ: Where I got to see many of your beautiful faces! SO happy that you all got to come and special thanks to my mom and dad for putting it together :)

Can’t wait for my next visit! Fingers crossed for Labor Day weekend :)
