Travel Guide :: Weekend Trip to Roslyn and Ellensburg, Washington

Since moving back to Washington, one of my absolute favorite things has been exploring locally and checking out some of the small towns we have. There are just so many cute and charming options! My latest adventures took me to Roslyn with a dash of Ellensburg, and let me just say I’m obsessed! Whether you’re looking for a fun day trip from the west side or you’re planning a weekend getaway with your friends or family, I’d definitely recommend checking these spots out!

Coming from the Seattle area, Rosyln is about an hour and a half and Ellensburg is about half an hour further. I-90 is known to get backed up with traffic — especially during the summer months though so I would just account for a little longer if you’re traveling during peak traffic. Regardless, it’s just a hop and skip away!

I recommend starting in Rosyln because you’ll hit it first. You can head right to their downtown which is located on Pennsylvania Street. If you haven’t visited before, Rosyln is an old coal-mining town that was founded in 1886 and it has plenty of western charm. Another one of its claims to fame is being the backdrop for the show Northern Exposure from the 90’s. Which after visiting, I kind of want to rewatch the series. I know I watched it as a kid but admittedly don’t remember much other than there being a moose walking across the road in the intro. You know, the important things you remember as a kid.

Where to go in Rosyln

The downtown isn’t big by any means — it is a small town after all! There are plenty of great restaurants and cute shops to check out though! Here are a few I recommend making sure you make it into.

Rosyln Cafe

If you did watch Nothern Exposure, you’ll recognize the mural on the side of the building! Let me tell you about their food though because it was BOMB.com! Seriously, so good! They offer breakfast all day as well as plenty of lunch or dinner options. My friends and I ordered their fried chicken sandwich, cafe burger and fish and chips and we were all very impressed. SO yummy!

Basecamp

Basecamp is a bookstore, gift store, coffee shop and bar! Covering all of its bases… see what I did there. Haha. This was such a cute shop though and they had a really great variety of books and cute gifts. They also have a bar downstairs with a wide range of signature cocktails, beer, cider and wine. The whole shebang.

Heritage Distilling

If spirits are your jam, then you’ll love Heritage Distilling. They have a really cute tasting room as well a gift shop that is worth checking out.

ShannDees Boutique

Also located in the Old Company Store is an adorable boutique that has a variety of clothing and gift options.

Fused

Another cool spot to check out is Fused which is a glass workshop studio. They have gorgeous glass pieces and also offer classes. There was actually a session taking place when we visited which looked really cool!

Brick Saloon

Another staple in the town is the Brick Saloon. In fact, it is also the oldest continuously operating bar in the whole state of Washington! Operating since being founded in 1889. When you walk in, it feels like you walked right back in time. They also have live music on Fridays and Saturdays.

This is just a list to get you started too! There are plenty of other options to check out too — that I’ll definitely be adding to my next trip. Rosyln is also close to a lot of hiking options in the summer and snow activities like snowmobiling in the winter so there are plenty of other things you can check out beyond the downtown too.

Where to Stay in Roslyn

Hotel Roslyn

If you want to make a weekend of it, I highly recommend checking out the Hotel Rosyln. It’s a boutique hotel located right up the block from main street and it’s absolutely adorable! The offer a variety of rooms and a few townhouses that are gorgeous and continue the charm you’ll find throughout the town.

If you’re looking looking for other places nearby to check out, you’re in luck! Because Cle Elum and Ellensburg are not far. Both offering other cute spots to visit! For this trip, we did not adventure in Cle Elum but we did drive through and there were a lot of spots that are on my list to visit next time around! We did go to Ellensburg though which is only about half an hour further from Roslyn. Here are a few places worth checking out!

A Few Spots in Ellensburg to add to your trip!

Thorp Fruit and Antique Mall

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve definitely seen me mention time place a time or two. It’s right off the freeway on your way to Ellensburg and is one of my favorite places to stop for produce or a snack while heading to eastern Washington. Beyond their produce though, they also have a full store with other specialty food items, wine, and two HUGE floors of antiques! This place is massive and definitely a fun stop.

A few other spots worth stopping at right in downtown Ellensburg are:

The Botany Shop

If you are a fellow plant lover, this shop is for you. It’s SUCH a good plant store! Full with a huge variety of plants, pots and gifts. The overall vibe was just TOP NOTCH too. Seriously so cute.

Hayday Bakery

Then our last stop on this trip was to Hayday Bakery. Which was the perfect last stop! We loaded up on treats and they did not disappoint. We each tried some of their baked goods and then enjoyed their coffee and hot apple ciders. I also took a few pieces of pie home and their peanut butter cream pie was to die for! Like, I’ll be driving through Ellensburg again just to get that if they have it again.

That’s a wrap on this trip! It was such a great time though so I hope you find some of these recs helpful!

P.S. If you like keeping up with my PNW adventures, Evan and I started an Instagram account focused on just that! Follow along at @TheHicksintheSticks

Donut Tasting :: Trying the Best Donuts in Spokane, Washington

Wedding planning is officially back on! My business blew up (in the best kind of way) this summer so I had told Evan I needed to hit the pause button on any wedding details until our vacay to Loon Lake. Which just so happened to coincide with a lot of my design projects launching. Alas, we just wrapped out trip to the lake so planning is officially back on.

While on the east side, we had an amazing engagement photo session with Hannah Acheson. Seriously, I can’t even say enough great things about her already! I am sooo not a mushy person and can be so awkward in front of the camera, soooo admittedly I was very anxious about that shoot. It ended up being SO fun though and Hannah made it so easy. She picked out the perfect spot, seriously it was outdoorsy, so many backgrounds and had gorgeous scenery…. She sent us a few sneak peeks already and omgg… we’re obsessed! You can check out a few she sent us on my Insta!

So that was definitely an exciting part of getting back to planning. Then the next thing on my priority list while we were in the area was donut tasting! If you know me… you know I loveeee me some donuts (and so does Evan) so they’ll definitely be making an appearance at our celebration. After doing a little research, we decided to try 4 different places.

Hello Sugar

Hello Sugar was our first stop and omg, this place was so adorbs! It was in this cute new development in Kendall Yards that kind of came out of nowhere when we were driving. It’s right inside this lovely coffee shop too. All of the Insta-worthy vibes for sure! They specialize in mini donuts and just the aesthetic alone… they are SO cute! I mean… look at them! They had lots of different flavors and we were recommended to try their carousel so we could try a little bit of everything — which was a good call for sure! The perfect bite-size of flavor!

Donut Parade

Donut Parade was our next stop and boy did they deliver on the tasty factor! This spot had kind of a donut diner vibe which I totally loved. I also loved their cute donut mural on the inside, you know I’m a sucker for these types of things. Of course, the real important part is the donuts though… which were BOMB! Seriously, we all really LOVED all of the options we tried here (there were 5 of us doing our tasting). They all just had such great texture and really packed a punch in the flavor department.

Casual Friday Donuts

Our last stop for day one was Casual Friday Donuts! The first thing we noticed when we pulled up is they had an announcement about doing weddings on their sign – which was good to know since that’s exactly the reason we checking out all of the donut spots! I really liked this spot too because they had some funky and unique flavors like their Butterfinger and their Double Chocolate. Definitely some more gourmet type flavors!

Retro Donuts

Our last stop on our donut tasting tour was Retro Donuts! We actually had to split our tasting into two days because they were closed by the time we made it out the first day. We weren’t early risers on vacay 😂 Alas, I made it there the next day and they were worth the wait! They’re all about keeping things classic and they do it right! We all really loved the varieties we tried – especially their seasonal huckleberry options. So delicious!

So which did we decide were our favs?! You’ll have to wait and see at our wedding! Yep, I really did that. Real talk though, we have a lot to consider because all places offered such delicious options! So if you’re looking for a sweet treat in the Spokane area, definitely check them all out! And also, if you’re planning a wedding do your own donut tasting because this was definitely my fav part of planning so far 😉

A Tacoma Annual Tradition Hunting for Monkeyshines: A Look at the Citywide Guerrilla Art Hunt
Anna Osgoodby Life + Biz: A Tacoma Annual Tradition Hunting for Monkeyshines: A Look at the Citywide Guerrilla Art Hunt

It’s Lunar New Year which means... Monkeyshine season is upon us in Tacoma! If you haven’t heard about it before, it’s an annual guerrilla art hunt where local artists hide a couple thousand glass orbs and medallions stamped with the Chinese Zodiac around the city.

Originally, it was started by someone known as “Ms. Monkey” and a friend who wanted to create joy and excitement for residents during our long grey winters. While deciding what they were going to create and hide, they were inspired by Ms. Monkey’s friend’s brass stamp he had created with a monkey on it. With access to a hot shop and donated glass, they decided stamping glass balls was the perfect creation. Plus, it would also pay homage to the city’s glass roots. From there, they created 200 creations and with a cohort of volunteers they hid them around the city. Here’s a peek at what some of them look like!

Their idea was a hit right from the bat, even with some initial confusion. Apparently the finds were being confiscated at first because they thought they had been stolen from the glass museum! After a very buzzworthy first year, Ms. Monkey’s crew decided to commit to hiding what would be known as “monkeyshines” each year for 12 years to complete a cycle (and later another cycle). How fun right?! You can learn even more about the back story of the tradition in this great article from Joanna Kresge of South Sound Magazine including an interview with Ms. Monkey herself.

Since then, the event has continued to evolve and others have decided to join in the fun including, now infamous, Marble Man who leaves marbles and others who leave their own gifts of charms, bracelets, and painted rocks to name a few. Adding even more treasures to be found! There aren’t any formal rules, but you can find monkeyshines in public places around the city and be sure to keep the honor system of 1 per person (that is if you’re lucky enough to even find one!)

Last year was my first year of hunting for monkeyshines and while we didn’t find anything, it was a really fun day of exploring the city — especially because we’d just moved. You could say we fully embraced the original mission of the event! That was also the day we ended up discovering my favorite brewery, 7 Seas Brewing (where I just celebrated my 30th Birthday party at)!

This year, I was lucky enough to (unsuspectingly) come across a red envelope with a pig charm inside too! I also walked by a guy who found a really gorgeous glass ball in Wright Park! So there are definitely treasures to be found out there! I’ve been keeping up with the hashtag on Instagram of finds too! No matter if you find something or not though, remember to enjoy the hunt and this great city because that’s where the real fun is!
