You Can Breathe Easier!
I know some of you worry about me being in the big city.. but I have some good news for you all!
The Upper East Side (my neighborhood) was recently named one of the safest neighborhoods to live in New York City including all 5 boroughs. This is because the Upper East Side as the 3rd lowest rate of violent crimes out of the 69 neighborhoods surveyed. with a population of 208,259 there were 1,871 crimes in 2010, mostly property burglaries.
More so than the crime rate, the population of the Upper East Side surprised me. I know that New York is heavily condensed but it is crazy to compare the population of the Upper East Side from 59th street to 94th street east of Central Park to other places I have lived:
- Population Enumclaw: 10,669 (2010): There are almost 19 times the amount of people living on the UES than Enumclaw. Enumclaw: 3.9 square miles UES: 2.3 square miles.
- Population Eugene: 156,185 (2010): There are only a little less than 50,000 people living in all of Eugene compared to the UES. Eugene: 40.54 square miles UES: 2.3 square miles.
- Population Portland: 583,776 (2010): There are more than double the amount of people living in the whole city of Portland than my little neighborhood in New York. Rightly so when compared to the land. Portland: 145.4 square miles UES: 2.3 square miles.
- Population Wilkeson: 477 (2010): There are more than 455 times the amount of people living on the UES than in Wilkeson. That’s okay though since the total square miles is only, Wilkeson: .5 square miles UES: 2.3 square miles.
My point being, for the amount of density in my little neighborhood, the amount of crime is actually pretty low and there were 0 murders accounted for the last year! Of course, it is not a reason to be ignorant of the dangers of the city, but hopefully you guys will sleep a little easier at night knowing where I live is relatively safe!
